How Japanese male names are built
Most Japanese male names use one or two kanji, sometimes three. Parents choose each kanji for its meaning, so the same name can be written many ways. Common endings hint that a name is a boy’s name:

|---|---|---|
| -to | Haruto, Yuto | 斗 (Big Dipper), 人 (person), 翔 (soar) |
| -ta | Sota, Kenta | 太 (thick, great) |
| -ki | Daiki, Haruki | 輝 (shine), 樹 (tree), 希 (hope) |
| -ya | Takuya, Tatsuya | 也 (also; a classic ending) |
| -suke | Kosuke, Daisuke | 介 / 輔 (helper) |
| -ro | Ichiro, Jiro | 郎 (son) |

Tips for choosing a Japanese boy name
- Check every kanji’s meaning. Some sounds can be written with kanji that carry sad or harsh meanings.
- Use standard readings. Since May 2025, Japan’s family register records readings, and readings unrelated to the kanji can be refused.
- Think about the full name. Say the family name and given name together: Satō Minato flows well.
- For characters, match the era. A modern teen is more likely to be Ren than Hiroshi.
